The film also spends too much of its brief running time on Russell’s friendship with hefty, clueless straight guy Gunnar (Andrew Caldwell) and a series of complications that awkwardly pair off Russell with a pretty, hot-to-trot classmate (Meaghan Martin). Unfortunately, the script by Edmund Entin, whose twin brother, Gary, directed, focuses more on Russell’s journey as a member of Goodkind’s newly formed Geography Club, which is actually a front for a secret gay and lesbian support group. Geography Club, Hartingers first novel, was published in the spring of 2003, the same year that the Massachusetts Supreme Court became the first in the nation to rule that a ban on same-sex. Stewart and Deeley are appealing, natural actors with convincing chemistry. Kevin would do anything to prevent his teammates on the baseball team from finding out. Russel is still going on dates with girls. I knew that any wrong action, however slight, could reveal my true identity. Sweet, slight and frequently familiar, “Geography Club,” based on Brent Hartinger’s novel about sexual identity among suburban teens, often feels as if it’s circling its expiration date.Īs the would-be heart of the movie, the burgeoning romance between two attractive, closeted 16-year-olds - low-key good guy Russell (Cameron Deane Stewart) and Goodkind High’s star quarterback, Kevin (Justin Deeley) - had great potential to take this largely pie-in-the-sky story to some honest, compelling and frankly sexy places. Gay and lesbian teenagers find mutual support when they form the 'Geography Club' at their high school.

That would certainly seem to have been true of his relationship with "Bosie", Lord Alfred Douglas, seemingly a spoiled brat further spoiled by Wilde's adulation. What does Wilde mean? Perhaps he is saying that love itself corrupts or alters its object. It is a revelation, and its structure is part of that revelation.Įveryone can quote the refrain: "For each man kills the thing he loves." Poetically, it's unquestionably powerful, and, intellectually, it's powerfully questionable. The Ballad is an indictment of the death penalty and the whole penal system, but it is much more than a protest poem. Around this narrative core, whose genre might be described as gothic realism, Wilde builds a meditation on the paradoxes of morality. The poem is dedicated to the memory of the "sometime" Royal Horse Guards trooper, Charles Thomas Wooldridge, and the central incident is Wooldridge's execution for the murder of his wife.
